Abstract

The research aims to clarify Al-Jawaliqi’s comments on IbnQutaybah in "Explaining the writer’s literature" with an independent research that contributes to revealing an aspect of Al-Jawaliqi’s linguistic efforts, as well as an attempt to identify the method or standard that each of them followed in finding mistakes and correction, and to determine the validity of Al-Jawaliqi’s comments, by placing them on the scale of language and examining the opinions of scholars about them, I introduced the research with a brief definition of Al-Jawāliqī and his book under study, and a brief overview of linguistic criticism. Then I began to present Al-Jawāliqī’s corrections and investigate the opinions of linguists about it, discussing and analyzing them, trying to show the preference between them according to what is supported by the evidence.
The research concluded with some results, the most important of which are: The difference in the approaches of both IbnQutaybah and Al-Jawaliqi in correction; IbnQutaybah took the path of extremism, as his zeal for the language and his desire to protect it from corruption led him to reject some usages and label them as melody despite their proven authenticity and their use in times of protest.
As for Al-Jawaliqi, he was more broad-minded and permitted everything he heard about the Arabs and was spoken by them, basing the validity of this on the documented narration and supporting evidence. Not all of Al-Jawaliqi’s pursuits were acceptable to the research, but he was sometimes correct and at other times he failed.
