Abstract

The Prophetic Sunna is the second foundational source of Islamic law after the Qurʾān. As a divinely inspired exposition of the Qurʾānic message, it is indispensable for a proper understanding of Islam and the implementation of its rulings. From the earliest generations, Muslims have taken exceptional care to preserve, document, and transmit the Sunna, and throughout the centuries, God has raised up scholars who have dedicated themselves to its service, ensuring its integrity and accessibility from the first century of Islam to the present day.
Among the distinguished contemporary scholars who devoted themselves to the Sunna and the life of the Prophet is the late Dr. Muhammad Abduh Yamani, may God have mercy on him. The aim of this study is to introduce his scholarly work and examine his efforts in the service of the Sunna. These contributions warrant recognition and critical study, given their depth and significance.
The study draws upon a selection of Dr. Yamani’s writings on adith and related subjects. It includes a biographical account and an analysis of his methodological approach. It examines, in particular, his thematic compilations of Prophetic traditions, his responses to modern criticisms of the Sunna, his method of adith authentication and grading, his interpretation of obscure terms within adith texts, and his attention to historical and geographical references found in Prophetic reports.
The research adopts an inductive, analytical, and descriptive methodology. Its findings highlight Dr. Yamani’s scholarly achievements in the field of adith, his intellectual integrity, his commitment to the preservation of the Sunna, and the literary quality of his prose. Among the recommendations offered are renewed scholarly engagement with his legacy, the reprinting of selected works, the preparation of a critical collected edition of his writings, and a systematic study of the adith material contained in his published corpus.
