The growing use of artificial intelligence in theological discussions, particularly in matters of creed, raises pressing ethical concerns. Among these is the risk of misattributing opinions to scholars, misrepresenting core beliefs, or generating content that lacks proper grounding in authoritative sources. This paper explores the concept of artificial intelligence and how it is being applied in theological contexts, with a specific focus on doctrinal questions. It critically examines the theological content produced by AI tools and considers how scientific methods might be responsibly integrated into religious inquiry in the age of rapid technological change. The discussion also highlights the central role of al-Azhar in responding to these developments and in guiding the ethical use of AI within the field of Islamic theology. The paper takes an integrative approach, combining insights from Islamic theology and computer science, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the topic. It emphasizes the importance of ensuring that input data for AI systems is accurate, reliable, and drawn from trustworthy sources. It argues for the necessity of continuous human supervision by qualified scholars, and for rigorous review of AI-generated content before it is accepted or circulated. The paper also calls attention to the broader risks of overdependence on AI in religious matters and urges the public to remain connected to traditional sources of religious authority, especially when dealing with questions of creed. One of the paper’s key recommendations is the establishment of research centers within al-Azhar that bring together Muslim experts in artificial intelligence and related fields. These centers would serve as collaborative platforms for monitoring how AI systems engage with Islamic beliefs and for addressing distortions or ethical oversights in AI-generated theological content.
