Abstract

This study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence on Arabic lexicography through the practical application of ChatGPT. Its main objective is to explore the nature and underlying principles of AI in order to assess the scientific validity of employing ChatGPT in processing Arabic lexicons. The study seeks to evaluate the model’s effectiveness and accuracy in carrying out certain functions traditionally associated with Arabic dictionaries—particularly its ability to explain Arabic vocabulary and whether such output aligns with classical and modern lexicographical sources. It also raises a critical question: can ChatGPT serve as a tool that supports Arabic lexicographic research, or does it risk becoming a burden upon it?
To address these questions, the study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology, analyzing how ChatGPT engages with lexical content and identifying both the strengths and shortcomings of its responses. The analysis offers insight into the model’s influence on Arabic lexicographic research and its potential implications—positive and negative—for the field.
The findings reveal that many of ChatGPT’s answers are lexically and scientifically inaccurate. Despite the model’s impressive speed and its ability to generate responses rapidly, excessive reliance on such tools may compromise human cognitive engagement and reduce the exercise of critical skills involved in lexicographic inquiry.
The study recommends that researchers approach ChatGPT with caution when conducting work in Arabic lexicography. It emphasizes the continued necessity of referring to authoritative lexical sources and calls for greater institutional investment in developing AI systems that are rigorously trained on authenticated Arabic dictionaries. Such efforts would enhance the quality and reliability of AI applications in the service of Arabic linguistic research.
