Abstract

This study represents a glimpse into the intellectual contributions of senior scholars of al-Azhar in confronting contemporary challenges facing Islamic and Arabic studies. It focuses specifically on the efforts of Grand Imam and former Shaykh of al-Azhar, Professor Dr. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Tāg, in addressing linguistic difficulties and exploring major questions in Arabic philology. The study highlights his broad scholarly engagement across multiple disciplines—both within the academic and institutional framework of al-Azhar and through his active participation in the Cairo Academy of the Arabic Language (Majmaʿ al-Lugha al-ʿArabiyya).
From the time he became a member of the Academy in 1964 until his passing in 1975, Dr. Tāg was a prominent contributor to numerous academic sessions, conferences, and committee meetings, particularly in the committees on Law and Economics, Philological Foundations, and the Grand Lexicon. Among the issues to which he devoted considerable attention was the linguistic and exegetical question of additions (ziyāda) in the Qurʾān.
This study seeks to shed light on Dr. Tāg’s treatment of this complex subject by analyzing his scholarly writings under the title: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Tāg and the Question of Additions in the Qurʾān. The research employs a descriptive, analytical, and inductive methodology. It comprises an introduction, two main sections, a conclusion, and a bibliography.
Among the key findings: Dr. Tāg authored ten separate studies on this phenomenon, through which he emerges as both a precise exegete and a skilled philologist. These writings reflect his distinctive interpretive and linguistic engagement with the Qurʾān, and may be regarded as individual efforts to elucidate and reconcile the phenomenon of textual additions within the framework of Qurʾānic exegesis and classical Arabic grammar.
