Abstract

In recent years, digital Qurʾānic applications have proliferated rapidly, yet this growth has also brought with it a troubling trend: the emergence of apps that contain distortions of the sacred Qurʾānic text. In light of this development, the present study seeks to highlight reliable Qurʾānic applications that employ advanced artificial intelligence technologies to serve the Qurʾān authentically and effectively. It focuses on the Tafsir Center for Qurʾānic Studies as a case study, examining its pioneering role in this evolving field.
The study is divided into two main axes. The first explores the historical and conceptual development of artificial intelligence, tracing its evolution from early theoretical models to its contemporary applications in Qurʾānic research. It further investigates the growing relationship between AI technologies and Qurʾānic inimitability (iʿjāz), emphasizing how technological tools can enhance engagement with the Qurʾān without compromising its sanctity.
The second part offers a detailed analytical study of the applications developed by the Tafsir Center. It begins with an overview of the Center’s vision and scholarly methodology, then assesses the range and functionality of its AI-powered tools. Particular attention is given to their role in preserving the integrity of the Qurʾānic text, promoting accurate understanding, and facilitating reflection and memorization.
The study adopts a descriptive-analytical and historical methodology, supplemented with visual documentation of selected applications. Its central aim is to evaluate the extent to which artificial intelligence can support and enrich Qurʾānic studywithout replacing traditional approaches.
Among its key findings, the study affirms that AI applications offer promising avenues for advancing Qurʾānic education and scholarship. However, it also cautions against uncritical reliance on digital tools and stresses the importance of complementing them with established scholarly practices. In conclusion, the study recommends the establishment of a regulatory framework to ensure the integrity of digital Qurʾānic content. It proposes forming a specialized supervisory committee under the auspices of al-Azhar, tasked with developing, implementing, and reviewing strict standards for Qurʾānic digital tools, thereby reinforcing al-Azhar’s leading role in safeguarding the Qurʾān in the digital age.
